You want a .22 rifle that just works. Something you can leave in the truck for checking varmints on the way to work, or let a new shooter learn on without worrying about getting it messed up. The Winchester Wildcat delivers. It’s a semi-automatic .22 Long Rifle built to be dependable, and easy to maintain.

What you’ll use it for:

Around El Paso, a .22 is good for a lot. Coyotes getting into livestock, javelina on the property, or just plinking targets out past Hueco Tanks. This Winchester handles those jobs. It’s also a great rifle for getting comfortable with the operation of a semi-automatic action before moving up to centerfire rifles. And it’s light enough for all-day carry while scouting.

Features:

  • Breaks down easy: The lower receiver removes without needing any tools. That’s important – .22s get dirty fast, and you need to be able to clean them without fighting stuck parts.
  • Works for everyone: Ambidextrous safety, bolt release and magazine release. No need to change how you grip the rifle if you’re left-handed.
  • Top Rail: Comes with a full-length Picatinny rail on the receiver. Mount a red dot or scope without needing extra adapters.
  • Button-rifled barrel: Winchester uses a button-rifling process to make the barrel. It’s known for consistency and accuracy, even with less expensive .22 ammo.
  • Lightweight design: The skeletonized stock cuts down weight without losing strength. Easier to carry on those longer walks across the lease.

What’s good and what’s not:

  • Good: Light, easy to take apart and clean, works for lefties and righties, accurate enough for most .22 work, fits a budget.
  • Not so good: The factory trigger pull is a bit heavy. You might want to think about an upgrade if you want really precise shooting. The stock doesn’t have a built-in cheek rest, so getting a good sight picture with a scope might take some adjustment.

Compared to the usual suspects:

You’ll see people talking about the Ruger 10/22 and the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22. Both are good rifles. The 10/22 is the classic, plenty of aftermarket parts available. The M&P15-22 is AR-style, which some folks prefer. The Winchester Wildcat hits a sweet spot: lightweight, reliable, and affordable. It’s a solid choice if you’re looking for a .22 that just gets the job done, without a lot of extra cost or complication.
