Buying a Gun Online in Nebraska and Hunting Rifles for Nebraska Game

Short answer: You can order a gun online, but it must go to a licensed dealer, not to your door. In Nebraska, one state rule matters a lot: to buy a handgun you generally need a handgun certificate from your local sheriff or police chief first. Rifles and shotguns do not appear in that law.

How buying online works

An online order is a two-step job. You pick the gun on the website. A licensed dealer near you then handles the transfer. The usual steps are:

  • Choose the gun and pay online.
  • The gun ships to a licensed dealer (an FFL) that you name.
  • At the dealer, you fill in the federal transfer form (Form 4473) and the dealer runs a background check through NICS.
  • If the check clears and you meet the legal age and residency rules, you take the gun home.

Federal age limits and other federal details are set by the ATF rules in 27 CFR Part 478. Ask your dealer to confirm the age rule for the gun type you want.

Nebraska handgun certificate rules

TopicWhat the Nebraska Legislature says
Handgun certificateA person may not buy, lease, rent or receive a handgun until they have a certificate under section 69-2404. Selling or transferring a handgun to someone without one is also barred. (Neb. Rev. Stat. 69-2403)
Who issues itThe chief of police or sheriff where the applicant lives. You can apply in person or by mail. (69-2404)
Age and feeApplicant must be 21 or older. The fee is $5 per application, which covers a criminal history check. Mail applications must be notarized. (69-2404)
Who is not eligiblePeople barred from buying or having a handgun under 18 U.S.C. 922. (69-2404)
ExemptionsNo certificate is needed when the person receiving the gun is a licensed dealer, a peace officer, or someone acting for a law enforcement agency. Antique handguns, short loans where the borrower stays in sight or at an established shooting facility, transfers between close relatives, and holders of a valid Concealed Handgun Permit are also exempt. (69-2403)

The law text does not say how long a certificate stays valid or how fast it is issued. Ask your sheriff or police chief. For waiting periods, magazine rules or other rules, check current rules with the Nebraska Attorney General, the Nebraska State Patrol or your dealer.

Hunting basics in Nebraska

Nebraska Game and Parks sets the hunting rules. Seasons, license prices, hunter education requirements and bag limits change each year, so read them on the official site before you buy a permit:

  • Hunter education rules and course options.
  • The current Big Game Guide, which lists species, permits and dates.
  • The legal-firearms table for each species.

Choosing a hunting rifle

State law lets the Game and Parks Commission write rules on the type, caliber and other specifications of firearms and ammunition used to hunt deer (Neb. Rev. Stat. 37-447). That means caliber minimums can exist, and they can change. The safe way to choose:

  • Read the legal-firearms table in the current Big Game Guide for the animal you plan to hunt.
  • Pick a rifle and cartridge that clearly meets it, with some room to spare.
  • Choose a rifle you can shoot well. Practice at a range before the season.
  • If you buy online, remember a rifle still ships to a dealer, and there is no handgun certificate step for rifles under the law above.

Common questions

Can I have a rifle shipped to my house?

No. Ship it to a licensed dealer, who completes the transfer paperwork and background check with you.

Do I need a certificate to buy a rifle in Nebraska?

The certificate law we read (69-2403) covers handguns only. Your dealer can tell you about anything else that applies to you.

Where do I check hunting rules?

On the Nebraska Game and Parks site, in the current Big Game Guide. Rules and dates change each year.
