Springfield Armory’s Kuna™ shook up the entire handgun market by winning both Guns & Ammo Handgun of the Year and Ballistic Magazine’s Best Gun of the Year in the same year. When two of the most respected firearms publications independently name the same gun their pick of the year, you pay attention.
The secret is the roller-delayed operating system. Developed in collaboration with Croatian manufacturer HS Produkt — the engineers behind the VHS-2 rifle system used by Croatian armed forces — this isn’t an experiment. It’s battle-proven technology adapted for the 9mm civilian market.

FAQs
Is this the same as an SBR?
No. The Kuna is classified as a pistol. However, with the optional folding brace it handles more like a short-barreled rifle. No NFA paperwork required for the base model.
Is the roller-delayed system difficult to maintain?
The roller-delayed mechanism is actually simpler than many gas-piston designs. Field strip and cleaning follow intuitive steps. Springfield’s documentation is thorough and the Armory Life community has extensive how-to resources.
How does the Kuna compare to a standard 9mm AR pistol?
A 9mm AR pistol uses either blowback or delayed-blowback operation with an AR lower. The Kuna is a dedicated PDW platform — lighter, more compact, and purpose-designed from the ground up for this role. The roller system runs cleaner and produces less reciprocating mass for a noticeably smoother shooting experience.
